A couple of days ago, the talented :iconmastertoymaker: MasterToyMaker was kind enough to sketch one of my ideas as one of his "Sketch a Day" pieces. See the sketch here:

I thought the sketch turned out rather nice, so I decided to color it. I've learned that I really need to work on coloring latex. It's HARD!

Latex and other hard shiny surfaces should probably have starker, more hard-edged highlights, I think.

But that can be a little weird in a softly-lit piece like this... hmm.

The starry night really adds something to it. I like this one. Good job. :)

I totally agree. The picture I tried using as a reference had the high contrast you're talking about, but when I put that in this image, it just looked out of place. I think you hit the nail on the head. It's the soft ambient light.

I also agree about the background. I colored the whole picture and then put the background in last. As soon as I created the gradient, it was like "aaaahhhhhh... that's nice." I wish now I would have created the background first. I think it would have helped me see the shadows better. Oh well, another lesson learned. :)
